Apologies for the recent hiatus in updating my blog and podcast. The past few years have been eventful. I transitioned to a new role. My responsibilities increased both personally and professionally. The demands on my time and energy intensified, leading me to prioritize health and conscientious living. Unfortunately, these changes left me with limited opportunities to keep my blog and website updated. But I am committed to returning to regular updates moving forward.
In summary, we relocated from South Korea to Austin, Texas. The rationale behind this decision is what I aim to delve into and elaborate on here.
Embracing change can be a daunting yet transformative experience. In this blog, I’ll share insights into our decision to leave South Korea. I will shed light on the challenges of a declining population and a demanding work culture. Additionally, I will discuss our pursuit of better career opportunities and create a conducive environment for my team’s professional growth.
- Declining Population and Social Dynamics: South Korea is a country known for its dynamic society. However, it has been grappling with a declining population. As expatriates, the impact on our family was palpable, especially concerning our children’s social lives. The smaller pool of potential playmates meant limited opportunities for our kids to form lasting friendships, hindering their social development.Childhood is a time for exploration, learning, and building connections. Our community is experiencing a demographic shift. This shift presents increasing challenges for our children. They find it difficult to engage in the vibrant social interactions that are crucial for their development. We wanted a more socially nurturing environment for our family. This decision significantly influenced our choice to move on.
- Korean Company Work Culture: South Korea’s economic prowess is undeniable, driven by innovative companies and tech giants. However, the renowned “work hard, play hard” ethos often comes at the cost of work-life balance. The demanding corporate culture, characterized by long hours and a hierarchical structure. This environment posed challenges for expatriates like us. We sought equilibrium between career aspirations and personal well-being. The decision to leave was not a rejection of the work ethic ingrained in Korean companies. Instead, we realized that a healthier balance could be struck elsewhere. My wife wanted to sought an environment that values professional growth while fostering employee well-being and collaboration.
- Better Career Opportunities and Team Growth: A pivotal aspect of our decision to relocate was the pursuit of enhanced career opportunities. We aimed for a conducive environment for my team’s professional growth. South Korea offers a dynamic business landscape. However, I explored opportunities elsewhere. These opportunities aligned more closely with my career objectives. Our team was driven by a shared vision. We sought a work environment that recognized individual contributions. We also prioritized collaborative growth. The decision to move was an investment in my professional journey. It was also an investment in the collective professional journey of everyone within my team. We believed that new horizons could provide the space and opportunities for our team to flourish and grow further.

Conclusion:
Leaving South Korea wasn’t a departure from the country’s strengths but a calculated move to address specific challenges while embracing new possibilities. The decision to prioritize our children’s social development, navigate away from an intense work culture, and pursue better career opportunities reflects a holistic approach to life’s journey. As we step into the unknown, we carry with us the lessons learned in South Korea and the anticipation of new experiences that will shape our personal and professional growth. I highly recommend South Korea as an excellent starting point for your career. This dynamic country not only offers abundant opportunities for professional growth but also allows you to explore diverse landscapes and cultures while building a lasting and fulfilling career.
